From the founder: Mentally Fit — Training the Capacity to Thrive

A course under Sharpen, one of the four moves. An introduction by Dr Alten du Plessis, founder of WorkSmart4Life.

This course is for anyone who wants to treat their wellbeing the way they would treat their fitness: measure it, train it and keep it up. At work it suits a professional in a demanding season, or anyone who would rather follow a training plan than wait for a good mood.

Mentally Fit teaches a well-known model of mental fitness as a training programme. Like physical fitness, mental fitness has parts you can train: strength, endurance, flexibility and team. A second idea from research on situations runs through it: train the inside, choose the outside, because where you are and who you are with matter as much as what you carry inside.

You measure first, in Your Mental Fitness Assessment, which reads both you and, through My Situation Audit, your circumstances. Strength works on knowing and using your strengths and on meaning and purpose. Endurance works on self-efficacy, competence, autonomy, positive emotion and resilience, with tools such as The 4 S Resilience Plan. Flexibility brings mindfulness and acceptance through practices such as Dropping Anchor and What I Can Control, and Team turns to support and relationships. In Your Training Programme you leave with My Wellbeing Training Plan, its weekly log, and a way to handle the weeks you miss.

On WorkSmart4Life this course sits under Sharpen. Several of its tools, among them Set Up My Space and Finding Your Ikigai, also appear in Work Well Together, so it carries the Work Environment and Meaning blocks further for each person. Begin with the first module, Wellbeing Is Fitness, and My Wellbeing Training Beliefs; a free 24-hour trial of the whole course lets you look around first.
